With over eighty sets of instruments around the UK, gamelan is now firmly established as a valuable tool in music education. Several members of the South Bank Gamelan Players are tutors for the Royal Festival Hall Gamelan Programme. In addition, they are increasingly in demand all over the UK and in Europe, working both with established groups and in the development of education projects on newly-commissioned gamelans. Royal Festival Hall Gamelan ProgrammeThe RFH offers a range of opportunities throughout the year to learn about the Javanese gamelan. These include family "taster" days for all ages; one-off introductory workshops lasting two hours for up to twenty people, from primary schools to GCSE groups and sixth form colleges, special needs schools, music colleges, or university students; short courses for teachers or for composers; and regular classes for all levels from beginners to advanced, including the Gong Club for children (minimum age 7). No particular musical experience or knowledge is required. For further details of these activities, please call the RFH Gamelan Co-ordinator on 020 7921 0953 | |
