Traditional Regional Styles

In contrast to the more formal and ritual music of the royal courts of central Java, gamelan music is at the same time an essential part of community life, and much of the repertoire has roots in street song or folk traditions. These roots manifest themselves as a number of regional styles each with their own characteristics, but often more lively and spirited.

Examples of such regional styles are Semarang (a town to the north of Central Java), East Java and Banyumas (a rural region to the west of Central Java on the border of Sunda).

As well as more formal training in the main cultural centres of Surakarta and Yogyakarta, some members of the group have taken time to explore and research these regional musical styles and the music has become an integral part of the group’s repertoire.
